Position Purpose

The overall duty of this position is to provide technical and administrative supervision to field crews for all NDT activities. The Field Supervisor provides the necessary leadership to plan, organize, direct and coordinate field operations to meet all client deliverables.

 

Due to the nature of this position there will be on-call and overtime requirements as well as some travel.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Examines and inspects work progress, equipment and job sites to verify safety and specifications are met.
  • Responsible for leadership on quality issues and recommends improved inspection techniques.
  • Ensures quality assurance operational objectives and policies are in compliance with company and industry policies and procedures.
  • Conducts field site visits for safety, quality and performance audits as required.
  • Directly supervises field staff and handling all aspects of personnel management – training, mentoring, coaching and discipline.
  • Works closely with management as the direct point of contact for clients.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication with and between functional groups/management to address problems and obtain resolutions. 
  • Plans, schedules, coordinates and completes all necessary documentation throughout the duration of each project in compliance with client, industry and company standards and policies.
  • Conducts NDT field inspections in compliance with client, industry and company standards and policies.
  • Trains, mentors and guides Technicians in operational activities including NDT, safety, radiation safety, quality and processes.
  • Ensures all equipment is setup, calibrated and functional at all times in alignment with client and company procedures.
  • Applies testing criteria in accordance with applicable specifications for both conventional and advanced NDT methods.
  • Provides direction, guidance and mentorship for the continuous development of Technicians and Trainees in compliance with industry codes, standards and procedures.
  • Provides applicable orientation and training to Technicians and Trainees.
  • Actively promotes and proactively models the company’s focus on safety when interacting with all current and future employees and clients.
  • Strong commitment to quality inspection and reporting.
  • Represents Applus with outside groups, regulatory bodies, associations, and clients.
  • Adhering to organizational policies and procedures, including but not limited to Applus Code of Ethics and Confidentiality Agreements.
  • Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Firmly adheres to the values and ethics of Applus. Exhibits honesty, discretion, confidentiality, and sound judgment.
  • Excellent technical knowledge and understanding of NDT techniques, services and procedures.
  • Fundamental understanding of industry codes, regulations and practices.
  • Ability to setup, calibrate, test, interpret and evaluate findings on required NDT equipment for both conventional and advanced methods in compliance with codes, standards and procedures.
  • Sound knowledge of radiation safety and operational field requirements regarding radiation safety.
  • Subject matter expert on the scope and limitations of NDT techniques and methods.
  • Ability to read technical documents and procedures and apply them in the field.
  • Excellent report writing and review skills.
  • Proven team leadership skills and the ability to influence others at all levels of the organization.
  • Have the aptitude to be multi-functional by working with appropriate departments in developing and reporting educational needs.
  • Excellent customer service focus, ability to quickly build strong working relationships with business partners and colleagues.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills matched with the ability to negotiate and build relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Ability to adapt in a high pressure and high production environment while managing competing priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize, solve problems, and consistently meet deadlines.

  • Strong computer skills in MS Office and other software applications.

Education and Work Experience

  • High School Diploma or Canadian General Equivalency Diploma, (GED).
  • Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) Level II certification/s.
  • 5+ years’ experience in NDT inspection.
  • 3-5 years' supervisory experience.
  • Training in Advanced NDT methods is a strong asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.

Working Conditions

  • Required to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid and dry/arid conditions in temperature extremes and inclement weather.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials in various working environments.
  • Commonly exposed to walking on slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • Occasionally required to work in noisy/loud working environments especially on project sites.
  • Work outside of normal business hours will be occasionally required.
  • Overtime required during the week and weekend with work volume.
  • Ability to be flexible with work schedules and respond to requests without advance warning or notification.
  • Occasional to frequent travel will be required within Canada.
  • Working conditions will vary between project locations.
