Position Purpose

Overall duty of this position is to take a leadership role in expanding our business across Canada. This key position is responsible for developing, implementing, and executing strategic sales and marketing plans for both existing and new business lines. The Canadian Business Development Director will play a pivotal role in driving revenue growth by managing relationships with key stakeholders, identifying new business opportunities, and working closely with Regional and Operations Managers to ensure the company’s goals and objectives are met.

 

Due to the nature of this position there will be some on-call and overtime requirements as well as some travel.

 

We are looking to staff one position with a candidate residing in either in Edmonton, AB, Calgary, AB, Greater Toronto Area, or Sarnia, ON. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Market Expansion

  • Develop and execute comprehensive business and sales strategies aligned with national objectives to drive revenue growth across Canada.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities, expanding market reach and increasing profitability across NDT and globally established service lines that have yet to be implemented in Canada.
  • Analyze market trends, competitive landscape, technological advancements, and economic conditions to assess risks and identify growth opportunities.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to define strategies related to budget allocation, operational efficiency, customer service, and technological advancements.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing sales and operations team, ensuring alignment with corporate goals and fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence.
  • Recruit, onboard, and train new team members, enhancing team dynamics and driving performance towards achieving ambitious sales targets.
  • Track and report on sales performance, ensuring effective pipeline management, accurate forecasting, and actionable insights to optimize performance.

Client & Stakeholder Relationship Management

  • Establish and maintain strong, long-term relationships with key clients and industry partners to drive customer satisfaction and business growth.
  • Conduct regular client engagements to assess service delivery, address concerns, and explore new opportunities, particularly in NDT and globally established service lines that have yet to be implemented in Canada.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of Requests for Proposals (RFPs), ensuring comprehensive evaluations including technical, commercial, risk, legal, and financial aspects.

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with operations, finance, and marketing teams to develop competitive pricing strategies and enhance business development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with global business development teams to identify and leverage cross-regional opportunities.
  • Facilitate the integration and transfer of best practices and innovative technologies between Canadian and international operations, ensuring knowledge sharing and process improvement.

Business Development & Process Optimization

  • Contribute to the development of Canada’s strategic business plan, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives.
  • Drive continuous improvement of sales processes, ensuring adherence to best practices in forecasting, contract management, and revenue optimization.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for cross-regional sales growth, leveraging synergies with other business units.

Talent & Organizational Growth

  • Oversee the recruitment and retention of top industry talent, working closely with HR to ensure continuous professional development within the team.
  • Develop succession planning and leadership development initiatives, ensuring future growth and stability in key business areas.
  • Promote and uphold the company’s corporate values, standards, and ethical practices, leading by example in all business interactions.
  • Assist in the coordination of the completion of internal PAPs, and external RFIs, RFPs, and bid documents to ensure timely, accurate and high-quality submissions.
  • Assist in maintaining effective communications between business development, support services and operations teams.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients and stakeholders. Act as the primary point of contact for customers across Eastern Canada, ensuring high levels of satisfaction and addressing any concerns in a timely manner.
  • Assist regional and divisional management in developing annual business plans, as well as with revenue budgeting and forecasting activities.
  • Regularly track and report on sales performance, including pipeline management, forecasts, and progress toward sales goals. Provide insights and recommendations to improve outcomes and respond to market changes.
  • Interface with NOAM and global business development representatives to identify cross-regional opportunities and strategies.

Industry Engagement & Corporate Representation

  • Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and trade shows, establishing credibility and expanding professional networks.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, emerging technologies, and evolving regulatory landscapes, ensuring the company maintains a competitive edge.

 

  • Adheres to organizational policies and procedures, including but not limited to Applus Code of Ethics and Confidentiality Agreements.
  • Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with a passion for developing talent and driving high performance.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring long-term business success.
  • Deep understanding of the oil & gas industry, industrial services and the Canadian market.
  • Strategic thinking and analytical skills to assess market opportunities and drive data-informed decision-making.
  • Extensive experience in RFP preparation, contract negotiation, and business planning.
  • Ability to work effectively across multi-functional teams, including operations, finance, and marketing.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment, balancing long-term strategy with immediate business needs.
  • Industry-leading awareness of new developments in technology and market opportunities.
  • Able to maintain an extensive and current network of relevant customer and technical contacts throughout Canada and North America.
  • Effective coach and mentor; assists in developing skills and abilities of colleagues and staff.
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office, specifically Excel, and other software applications.

Education and Work Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in business development, sales, or operational roles (within NDT considered an asset).
  • Demonstrated success in leading sales teams and driving revenue growth in a competitive market.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, or a related field considered an asset.
  • Equivalent industry experience combined with other formal training and accreditations may be accepted.

Working Conditions

  • The physical environment requires the employee to work inside an office environment, protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. There may be requirements to work on project sites, which could involve fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions.
  • The work is primarily sedentary.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
  • Work outside of normal business hours will be occasionally required.
  • Overtime required during the week and weekend with work volume.
  • Ability to be flexible with work schedules and respond to requests without advance warning or notification.
  • Occasional to frequent travel will be required within Canada.
